Is your deck "thirsty"?

The Autumn Shield: Because CCA Treatment Isn’t a Magic Wand.

We’ve spent the last few months talking about the “Main Thing”: building with quality CCA treated timber. But here is a constructive challenge for you: Even the best timber needs a coat of armour. At Noag’s Market, we see it every year. A customer builds a beautiful deck or a sturdy kraal in December, and by March, they’re wondering why the wood looks “thirsty” or slightly grey. The truth? CCA treatment protects your timber from rot and termites (the internal battle), but it doesn’t stop the harsh South African sun from sucking the moisture out of the fibers (the external battle). This March, it’s time to talk about The Autumn Shield.

Is Your Timber Thirsty? (The Water Test)
Before the dust of winter settles, perform this 5-second “Main Thing”test: Pour a little water onto your timber surface.

– Green Flag: The water beads up and sits on top. Your seal is still holding.
– Red Flag: The water soaks into the wood immediately. Your timber is “thirsty,”exposed, and at risk of UV damage and cracking.

The Science of the Shield.

Think of CCA treatment like a vaccine—it protects the inside. Think of a high-quality sealer like sunscreen—it protects the outside. In our Hardware section, we don’t do “side show” products. We stock sealers and oils that are designed for our climate.

The Noag’s Guide to Sealing:

You can’t protect dirt. Use a proper timber cleaner to get the grey off.

For outdoor timber, we almost always recommend a high-quality penetrating oil. It moves with the wood, whereas varnish often cracks and peels under the African sun. http://www.noags.co.za/product-category/sealants/silkwood/

March is the sweet spot. The wood is dry from summer, but the winter frost hasn’t arrived to freeze the moisture inside the cracks.

Don’t Forget the Hardware
A shield is only as strong as its fasteners. While you’re sealing your timber, check
your bolts and screws. If you see rust bleeding into the wood, that’s a red flag. We stock the correct decking screws and other hardware that won’t give up when the weather turns. https://noags.co.za/product-category/hardware/

Fuel for the Work
Maintenance is thirsty work. While you’re at the Market picking up your “Autumn
Shield” supplies, stop by the Deli. We’ve got the “main thing” for your post-work braai—because nothing makes a freshly oiled deck look better than the smell of a Wagyu steak on the fire.

The Autumn Shield starts at Noag’s. Let’s protect what we’ve built.
