Use CCA treated poles when there is ground contact as our poles are H4 treated, perfect for your structure. https://sawpa.co.za/choosing-the-right-preservative-treated-timber/ - Black Plastic Lining – to line the inside and protect the wood from direct contact with soil and moisture.
- Screws – for fastening it all together securely. https://noags.co.za/product-category/hardware/eureka/
- Paint or wood sealer – to finish and personalize your box. It is very important to remember that all timber used outside needs to be sealed on all 6 sides. Even CCA treated timber will need to be sealed to protect against the weather and sun. A great product available at Noag’s Market is Silkwood. https://noags.co.za/product-category/sealants/silkwood/
How to Build It
Step 1: Cut Your Timber
Decide how big you want your planter to be. A good size to start with is around 1,2m long x 40cm wide x 40cm high.
Cut your CCA treated pine for the sides and CCA poles for the corners. The CCA treatment
penetrates through out pine, but not the poles. So where ever you have cut poles, remember
to seal on the ends.
Step 2: Build the Frame
Use the treated poles as the four corners. Screw the pine planks horizontally to these poles,
forming the sides of your box.
Step 3: Add the Bottom (Optional)
If you want a raised planter, screw a few planks along the bottom with small gaps for
drainage. Otherwise, you can place your box directly on the soil. Use black plastic to protect your pine planks from direct contact with the ground.
Step 4: Line It Up
Staple or secure the black plastic lining inside your planter box. Make a few small holes in
the plastic base to allow water to drain out.
Step 5: Fill and Plant!
Add a layer of gravel for drainage, then fill with potting soil and your choice of herbs, flowers, or vegetables.
Why Use CCA Treated Timber?
Outdoor projects need protection against moisture, insects, and rot — and that’s where CCA treated pine and treated poles come in. They’re designed to last through the seasons, making your planter box sturdy and low maintenance for years to come.
